Credit Card Late Payment Fees

If you have a credit card then the chances are, at some point, you have paid some kind of late payment fee. These charges can be frustrating, particularly as they are applied automatically by your lender regardless of whether you are just a few hours or just a few days late making the payment.

Most of the time these late payments are made completely unintentionally because your statement was lost in the post, you were away or unwell, but, regardless, of the reason, in most cases, you still receive the charges on your account.

In the past the situation was worse as lenders charged up to £35 when a customer made a late payment. This situation changed in 2006, though, when the Office of Fair Trading undertook an investigation into these type of charges. Lenders tried to justify these high charges claiming they were necessary to cover costs incurred, but the Office of Fair Trading rejected this claim and announced that £12 should be the maximum charge applied in these cases.

Since the Office of Fair Trading Investigation most lenders have lowered their charges and now, if you have paid fees in the past, you have the right to make a claim.
